In the previous issue of Softshare Times, we asked you to hold off on upgrading any WinCATS machine to the Microsoft Windows Vista operating system so that we had time to test WinCATS’ compatibility with the new operating system. That was two months ago and, since then, we’ve made some minor changes to WinCATS’ architecture to support Windows Vista.
The newest build of WinCATS (build 122), which you’ll receive at the time you upgrade to build 419 of WebCATS, is fully compatible with Windows Vista. However, there are special WinCATS installation and setup steps that you must take in order to successfully run WinCATS in a Windows Vista environment. In addition, there are a few caveats to be aware of when performing EDMIS exports. These are outlined in the Softshare Knowledge Base article titled "Running Softshare WinCATS on a Windows Vista computer."
And that’s why we give you a yellow light on Microsoft Vista instead of a green one: go for it, but not until you’ve upgraded to WebCATS build 419 and, hopefully, not until you're aware of the special considerations that apply.
Note: Don’t confuse Microsoft Windows Vista with Softshare Vista! Softshare Vista is no longer compatible with WinCATS, as we recently phased out this communications application’s use in the Softshare ‘CATS environment.
