How Softshare Backs Up Data

Talking about scheduled downtime in our "We're Moving" article got us to thinking that we should probably discuss Softshare's backup procedures in the event of unscheduled downtime. If there is an Internet outage or other type of unhappy event that causes Softshare's network to experience unscheduled downtime, we have a couple of safeguards in place:

• Off-site backup tapes. If the Softshare offices were to experience a fire or some other type of damaging event, we store daily backup tapes off-site. A Softshare-hosted center might lose up to a day's worth of data and it might take some time to bring our network back up, but we would restore your database as quickly as possible
• An alternate T-1 line. If something were to happen to our Internet connectivity, we have a completely redundant system that would take over.

However, if all of Santa Barbara were to fall into the ocean, Softshare's hosted 'CATS databases would become Garibaldi food. In other words, in the unlikely event that a natural disaster were to strike Santa Barbara, you could lose your entire database. If this thought keeps you up at night, Softshare has a solution. Starting at $100 a month depending upon the size of your database, we can replicate your data on a server that is physically located at our Amsterdam offices. Your data would be replicated near real time, so you would lose less than one day's worth of data, if any data at all, and experience no more than a 24 hours of downtime in the event of a Santa Barbara disaster.
